Travel Guide / Andalucía Bed & Breakfasts / Guest Houses / Rural Self-Catering

Sierra Norte de Sevilla or Sierra Norte (Northern Range) is one of the western mountain ranges of the Sierra Morena in Andalucía, Spain. Its name derives from its location at the northern part of Sevilla Province. The highest point of the range is the 960 m high Cerro de La Capitana. This range gives its to the wine of the area, the Vino de la Tierra Sierra Norte de Sevilla and the area has several interesting attractions.

The climate is less humid than in the Sierra de Aracena further west. Holm oaks are common, growing in clarified forests where there are also large clearings, known locally as dehesas. These are characteristic of the Sierra Morena landscape and are traditional pasture zones for cattle and pigs. Also typical are the gallery forests shading the rivers of the range that provide a home to birds such as the Spanish imperial eagle, the cinereous vulture and the black stork.

Attractions in the area:

Cerro de HierroCerro del Hierro (iron hillock) is an interesting karstic site within the range which has been declared a natural monument.

Hueznar CascadasThe Huéznar Cascades is an area of the river of the same name where you will find a series of waterfalls and pools rising from unique limestone formations known as travertine.

Along these waterfalls, also known as Las Chorreras, the river runs through with crystal clear water. This set of waterfalls was declared a Natural Monument in 2001. Please note: Swimming is not allowed here.

Cueva de los CovachosCueva de los Covachos - The Hill of the Covachos is located to the north of the town of Almadén de la Plata. The Covachos cave can be accessed either by the path that passes by the Plaza de Toros de Almaden de la Plata, as well as a walk from the road linking with El Real de la Jara, the A-5301 Almaden.

Roman quarries include two manholes to the inside of the cave.

There are several halls and galleries spread over two floors, with a pit in final ramp which in turn is divided into multiple narrow galleries. To access a special permission from the Junta de Andalucía is required.
