La
Rioja is a province and autonomous community of northern Spain. Famous
for wine-making, its capital is Logroño. Other cities and towns
in the province include Calahorra, Arnedo, Alfaro, Haro (one of the major
wine towns of the region; a hill town that is home to a number of world
famous bodegas (wineries)), Santo Domingo de la Calzada, and Nájera.
La Rijoa is bordered by the
Basque Country (province of Álava), Navarre, Aragón (province
of Zaragoza), and Castile and León (provinces of Soria and Burgos).
The river Ebro flows through this region, as does the river Oja, for which
it is known.

Parador
de Sto. Domingo de la Calzada, Sto. Domingo de la Calzada |
|
In the heart of Santo Domingo
de la Calzada, this Parador is housed in a 12th Century former hospital,
next to the Cathedral, built to house the pilgrims on the St James' way.
The majestic lounges and vestibule are regal and elegant in style, with
gothic arches and coffered celings. Furnishings are in bright colours,
blue and white, leading to tastefully decorated guest rooms, some with
canopied beds. In the Parador's restaurant, the local red peppers
must be sampled, especially stuffed, whether with black pudding or other
foods. The mixed vegetable platters are a famous product of this excellent
farming region. And naturally, everything is accompanied by the excellent
wines of La Rioja ...
